Developed in the 1920s, Leimert Park is a residential gem that features Spanish Colonial Revival homes amongst the lush, tree-canopied streets. At its heart lies a vibrant commercial hub and eponymous park, a timeless cornerstone for its residents. It has become the center of both historical and contemporary African-American art, music, and culture in Los Angeles.
The park is named after its developer, Walter H. Leimert, who began the project in 1928. His design plan was masterminded by the Olmsted Brothers firm, managed by the sons of Frederick Law Olmsted (1822–1903), the renowned designer of New York City’s Central Park and other major projects.[2] Initially designed for upper and middle-income families, Leimert Park stands as a pioneering blueprint for urban planning; minimized traffic near schools and churches, hidden or buried utility wires, and densely planted trees lining its streets. Walter Leimert envisioned a self-sufficient commercial district community with a town square, movie theater, transportation, and retail shopping. Today, Leimert Park boasts homes ranging in price from $800,000 – $1,300,000 and above. Its core area, known as “The Village”, is still the heart of this famed neighborhood, defined by its walkable streets, community vibe, and stunning architecture from the 1920s and 1930s. It’s also home to multiple well-preserved and quaint Spanish houses in urban Los Angeles, complete with tree-lined avenues and easy access to major traffic arteries.
